The CI Electronics Water Sorption Analyzer
General Description:
The CISorp is an integrated microbalance system for the automatic measurement of water sorption in materials by the gravimetric method. This analytical technique is of interest in many areas of fundamental and applied research and in a wide range of industries and processes.
The system incorporates two high-accuracy ultra sensitive microbalances manufactured in-house by CI Electronics Ltd., an expert in microbalance technology for almost forty years.
By exposure of the two balances to the same conditions of temperature and relative humidity, two samples can be studied separately. Alternatively, larger or heavier samples can be suspended across both balances
The system is controlled by powerful Windows (TM)-based software.
Principle of Operation:
Wet and dry air or nitrogen streams are mixed automatically by a computerized feedback control system to produce relative humidity values at pre-programmed levels.
The temperature in the weighing chamber is controlled by solid-state thermoelectric devices. This allows rapid cooling as well as heating.
The sample weights are continuously monitored and stored at intervals determined by the user. Cut-off criteria for steps can be set in terms of a fixed time and/or rate of weight change.
An experiment can contain a large number of steps at different conditions of relative humidity, temperature and/or cut-off criteria. Step conditions can be changed during a test to allow optimization of regimes without the need for repetition.
Stored data can be viewed or printed graphically or exported to other packages for analysis.
CI Electronics also offers a Water Sorption Testing Service where CI is able to test your samples at their UK facility.
Typical Applications:
- Hydration studies of pharmaceutical materials
- Ad-/desorption of isotherm compounds
- Thermodynamic parameters of material surfaces
- Pore sizes and distribution of solids
- Kinetic parameters of water uptake by samples
- Quality assurance testing for material conformity
- Temperature dependence of water sorption
- Sample changes mediated by water
